Joe Stoshack has to write a report about an African American who made an important contribution to society, and he has an unusual advantage: with the right old baseball card in his hand, he can travel through time.

About

Jackie and Me is a novel for young readers by the American writer Dan Gutman, published in 1999.

Joe's talent comes from his father, and it has rules: the card must be genuine and old, and the traveller arrives in the past as himself. He goes back to meet the man who broke the colour barrier in professional baseball, and the novel describes a period in which segregation in the stands, the hotels and the restaurants was ordinary and legally enforced. Joe's experience of it is direct, because the journey changes his appearance while he is there, and he has to decide what to do with what he has seen when he gets home. Gutman writes the historical detail plainly and keeps the story moving, and the book is as much about the report Joe writes as it is about baseball.

It is one of a series of books in which the same boy travels back to meet figures from American history, and it followed a story about him and the baseball player Shoeless Joe Jackson.
