About
I Survived the Attacks of September 11, 2001 is a children's novel by the American writer Lauren Tarshis, published in 2012. It is one of her I Survived books, which put a young character inside a historical disaster.
Lucas plays football, and he plays it partly because of Benny, an old friend of his father's who taught him the game and comes to watch him. When his parents decide that the sport is too dangerous and that he has to give it up, Lucas goes to Benny, who is a firefighter in New York and the one adult he believes will take his side. The novel places him in the city on the morning of 11 September 2001, and the story follows a child who has gone somewhere ordinary for an ordinary reason and finds himself in the middle of an event that is being reported around the world.
Tarshis writes the series for readers of about eight to twelve, with the historical situation kept to what a child of that age could see and understand, and the books are widely used in schools as a way into the events they describe.
