Hunter's Run
Ramón Espejo left Earth for a colony world and found the same poverty he had run from.
About
Hunter's Run is a science fiction novel written by Daniel Abraham, Gardner Dozois and George R. R. Martin, published by Harper Voyager in 2007 and expanded from their earlier novella Shadow Twin.
The novel's first half belongs to Ramón, who is one of the least likable protagonists in the authors' work: violent, self-pitying and by his own admission bad at being a person, which is what makes the second half work, since the aliens who capture him use him in a way that requires him to understand another mind. They need him to track a man who escaped their installation, and the capture is described from the inside, with the machinery and the negotiations of a creature who does not think like him. The colony itself is drawn from the history of frontier settlements rather than from a space opera, and the planet's authorities are barely present, which leaves the confrontation to the three of them in the bush. It was published in Britain in September 2007 and in the United States in January 2008, and it belongs to the small group of novels in which Martin's earlier science fiction interests, rather than his epic fantasy, are on display.
