House of the Beast
A young woman born out of wedlock and shunned by the society she was raised in makes a bargain with a god, and the bargain is for revenge on the aristocratic family that turned its back on her.
About
House of the Beast is a fantasy novel by the American writer and illustrator Michelle Wong, published in 2025 by Harper Voyager.
The book's central figure is a young woman born outside marriage and raised on the edges of a society that has no use for her, who strikes a bargain with a mysterious and attractive god for the purpose of taking revenge on the aristocratic family that rejected her. What she has agreed to is only partly explained to her, and the house she is drawn into has rules of its own that she has to learn while the revenge she asked for begins to arrive. Wong writes and illustrates the book, and the story is a gothic one, with a bargain at the centre of it and a great deal of attention paid to the rooms it takes place in.
The novel is Wong's first, and it sits at the meeting point of fantasy and romance that the shelf marks with its romantasy tag. It is illustrated throughout by the author.
