Hollow City
Jacob Portman and the peculiar children leave the island where they had been safe and travel towards wartime London to find help for Miss Peregrine, who is trapped in the form of a bird.
About
Hollow City is a dark fantasy novel by the American writer Ransom Riggs, released on 14 January 2014 by Quirk Books. It is the second book in the sequence that began with Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, and it is illustrated with the same kind of found photographs.
The novel begins where the first book ends: Miss Peregrine is caught in her bird form, the children have lost the protection of their loop, and they have to reach someone who can help. Their journey takes them across Britain and into London during the Blitz, and the creatures that hunt them are still following, so the book is a chase rather than a stay in one place.
Riggs keeps the photographs underneath the story, so the reader meets each new character as an image before they are described. This is the middle volume of the sequence, it was followed by further books, and it widens the world of the first novel beyond the island, with the children on the road for almost the whole of it.
