Heaven and Earth
Ripley Todd is a deputy on Three Sisters Island, content with her job and not much interested in changing anything, except that she has inherited powers she cannot control and will not talk about.
About
Heaven and Earth is a novel by the American writer Nora Roberts, published in 2001. It combines a romance with a story about witchcraft on an island off the New England coast.
Ripley Todd is a sheriff's deputy who has built a quiet life on Three Sisters Island and intends to keep it that way. The complication is that she has inherited abilities she finds frightening and cannot manage, and she spends a good deal of energy hiding them from everyone she knows.
MacAllister Booke comes to the island to look into the stories of witchcraft that have attached themselves to the place, and he notices something unusual about Ripley almost at once. She will not admit to any of it, so he sets about trying to help her accept what she is, and she does not thank him for noticing. The two of them run into the older history of the island: what happened to the three sisters the place is named for, and the danger that past still presents to the women living there.
