About
The script of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was written by Jack Thorne, working from a story he developed with J. K. Rowling and John Tiffany. It was published as a book in 2016, the year the production opened in London's West End.
The play is the eighth story of the series and opens nineteen years after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Harry is overworked at the Ministry of Magic, married, and the father of three school-age children, and the story turns on his youngest son. Albus Severus Potter arrives at Hogwarts expecting to follow in his father's footsteps and is sorted instead into Slytherin, which leaves him feeling that he cannot live up to the family he belongs to.
Father and son spend much of the play at odds with each other, and the story brings the past back into the present until both of them are forced to reconsider where the trouble in their family actually comes from. The West End production won nine Olivier Awards in 2017, including Best New Play, and a Broadway production opened in 2018.
