Grandfather's Dance
Cassie Witting thinks there could be nothing better than a prairie wedding, and one is coming: two lovebirds brought together, aunts arriving from as far away as Maine, a long white dress with a veil, zinnias and satin ribbons, dancing under a clear blue sky.
About
Grandfather's Dance is a novel for younger readers by the American writer Patricia MacLachlan, published in 2006. It is the fifth book about the Witting family.
The book is built around a wedding on the prairie, which is the event Cassie Witting has been looking forward to. For her, the day means two people she loves being brought together, aunts coming from as far away as Maine, a long white dress with a wedding veil, zinnias, satin ribbons and dancing outside under a clear sky.
Around the celebration, the novel follows the larger things that arrive along with it: the seasons changing, Brother Jack sitting on Grandfather's lap, a brand-new car, and both joy and sorrow arriving in the same stretch of time on the prairie.
The Witting family's story began in Sarah, Plain and Tall, and this book is where the series comes back around to where it started. It is a celebration of the enduring spirit of a family rather than a novel driven by plot, and it finishes with a dance that only the grandfather does.
