Goosebumps Most Wanted - Frankenstein's Dog
Kat is reluctant to visit her uncle Vic Frankenstein because of the rumours about him, but she finds that he is a quiet and gentle man living in a dark, castle-like mansion and working as a scientist who builds robots with artificial intelligence.
About
Goosebumps Most Wanted - Frankenstein's Dog is a novel by R. L. Stine, published in 2013 and part of the Goosebumps Most Wanted cycle. It is one of the later Goosebumps titles rather than one of the original 1990s run.
The story deliberately inverts the expectation created by the name. Kat is nervous about visiting her uncle because of the rumours that surround him, and she discovers instead a mild man in a large dark house whose work is building robots with artificial intelligence rather than creating life from corpses. The household also contains a small white dog she becomes attached to. The mansion looks like the house of a mad scientist, and the joke is that the man inside is neither mad nor interested in the dead.
The accident in the laboratory is what turns the visit into a horror story, and the novel's question is whether Kat is responsible for what follows or whether something else is. Stine's later cycles reuse the same tone as the original series while adding an overarching setting, and this title's subject matter, machine intelligence in a domestic setting, is one of the more contemporary premises in the run.
