Fear Street - The New Boy
Janie and her friends make bets about which of them will be the first to date Ross, the mysterious new boy in town.
About
Fear Street - The New Boy is a young adult horror novel by R. L. Stine, published in 1993. It is one of the shorter Fear Street titles, and the premise is deliberately spare.
The set-up is a social wager among a group of friends over who will get a date with the newcomer, which establishes both the ordinary teenage frame and the competition that will be tested. The murders begin afterwards, and the book withholds the connection between the arrivals and the deaths, which is the standard structure of the line: a mundane social situation, then a body count that recasts the people involved.
Because the premise is so compressed, the novel depends on the reader's assumptions about who is trustworthy, and the title points directly at the suspect, which is part of the game the series plays. Stine wrote these books at roughly a hundred and fifty to two hundred pages, and the Fear Street titles were published in large numbers through the 1990s for readers moving on from Goosebumps. The title names an arrival rather than a crime, and the book keeps to the series' habit of placing one new person inside a settled group before anything goes wrong.
