Fablehaven
Two children go to stay with a grandfather they hardly know, and find that his house and the grounds around it are not what they appear to be.
About
Fablehaven is a fantasy novel by the American writer Brandon Mull, published in 2006. It is his first book, and the first of a series about the same place.
Kendra and Seth Sorenson are the two children at the centre of it. They visit the mansion belonging to their grandfather, and what they do not know at first is that the estate is a reserve where magical creatures have been gathered.
The refuge exists to keep those creatures from dying out, and it is one of the last places where magic of that kind is still present. It is also full of rules, and the novel turns on what happens when the rules are broken.
The grandfather and the people who look after the place are eventually taken by imps, so the two children have to rescue them, and a witch named Muriel is at the same time working to release a powerful demon called Bahumat. Mull wrote the book in five months after an earlier manuscript of his was turned down.
