Everything I Never Told You
Lydia Lee is dead, and the novel's first line says so before anybody else in the family knows.
About
Everything I Never Told You was published in 2014 and was Celeste Ng's debut novel. It was named one of the best books of the year by Amazon and by several newspapers, and Ng has said it took six years and four complete drafts to write. The novel was followed in 2017 by Little Fires Everywhere, and both books are domestic fiction built around a small town and a family that knows less about itself than it thinks.
The book is structured around a drowning, but it is not a detective novel. The mystery of how Lydia died is answered gradually through the family's history, and the reader learns what happened by moving backwards and forwards through the years: the parents' marriage, the pressure placed on Lydia to live out her mother's abandoned ambitions, the older brother heading to university and the younger sister who is left. Ng's method is to give each of the five family members their own reasons, and none of them are malicious in the way the word usually implies.
The novel was a commercial success and has been translated widely, and it is often taught alongside other American fiction about immigrant families and the expectations that arrive with them. It is a standalone, and it belongs between the domestic suspense novels and the literary family sagas on the shelf. Ng's interest in the book is in how a family can be close and still be unknown to itself, and the resolution is about recognition rather than punishment. The novel's title points at the things the family never said to one another rather than at the crime scene, which is a fair summary of how the book is built.
