Eternal
Miranda has just become the life of the party, and all she had to do was die.
About
Eternal is a young adult novel by Cynthia Leitich Smith, published in 2009. It is a gothic comedy of manners with vampires in it, and it alternates between two narrators who have very different opinions about the household they are living in.
Miranda is a high-school theatre hopeful who becomes a vampire of some standing almost overnight, because the King of the Mantle of Dracul takes an interest in her and raises her into his court. She is glamorous, powerful and surrounded by company that would happily make a meal of her. Zachary is her guardian angel, demoted to human form and given the job of personal assistant, which means protecting her soul from the inside of a house full of aristocratic predators. Much of the comedy comes from the gap between Zachary's earnestness and the manners of the undead around him, who are busy planning a Death Day gala and deciding what to do about the new arrival.
The novel treats its vampires as a social set with rules, rivalries and elaborate parties, and its romance plays out between two people whose jobs put them on opposite sides of an arrangement neither of them chose.
