Ender's Shadow
Bean is small even for a child living on the streets of a city where gangs of hungry kids fight over scraps, and he survives with his mind rather than his fists.
About
Ender's Shadow is a science fiction novel by the American writer Orson Scott Card, published in 1999 and set in the same school as Ender's Game.
The book tells the story from the point of view of Bean, an exceptionally small and exceptionally clever child who has kept himself alive on the streets of Rotterdam by working out what the gangs around him will do before they do it. Recruiters take him off the street and into Battle School, where children are organised into armies and play a game with fleets and soldiers that is not entirely a game. Bean is younger and weaker than the others and better than almost all of them at seeing how a system works, and the novel follows him through the school's tests and politics while the war it is preparing the children for comes closer. It retells the events of the earlier novel from a different seat in the room.
The book began a sequence of its own, told from the perspective of the same character.
