Elysium Fire
Two years after Aurora Rising, citizens of the Glitter Band are dying in a manner nobody can explain: the neural implants in their heads overheat and destroy their brains, apparently at random.
About
Elysium Fire is a science fiction novel by the Welsh writer Alastair Reynolds, published in 2018. It is set in his Revelation Space universe and is a direct sequel to Aurora Rising, though Reynolds has said it does not require any knowledge of the earlier book.
The novel begins two years after the events of Aurora Rising. Senior Prefect Tom Dreyfus and Field Prefect Thalia Ng are investigating a series of deaths in which ordinary citizens, with no connection to one another, melt: the neural implants in their heads overheat rapidly and fry their brains. The deaths increase in frequency while the Prefects have no idea where to begin looking.
At the same time several habitats in the Glitter Band, unhappy with the decisions Panoply made at the end of the previous book, begin to secede and so pass out of Panoply's authority altogether. The movement is led by the elusive Julius Devon Garlin Voi, who seems to have inside knowledge of what has been happening to the people who are dying. The series continues with Machine Vendetta.
