Dream Count
Chiamaka is a Nigerian travel writer living in America, alone during the pandemic and thinking about the men she has loved and the choices she has made.
About
Dream Count is a novel by the Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, published in 2025. It is her first novel since Americanah.
The book follows four women, three of them friends, across the years before and during the pandemic. Chiamaka is a travel writer who has spent her working life moving between countries and who is now confined to one place and to her own memories of the relationships she has had. Zikora is a lawyer who has succeeded at everything she set out to do and who finds herself, at the point of betrayal, turning to someone she had thought she did not need. The novel is built out of their separate accounts and the ordinary business of their lives, and Adichie uses the pandemic as the reason the characters have time to look at what they have made of their choices. Her previous novels have dealt with Nigeria and the United States, and this one keeps both in view.
Adichie has published novels, short stories and essays over more than twenty years, and this book appeared after a gap of more than a decade since her last novel.
