About
Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend is a romantic comedy by the English writer Jenny Colgan, published by Sphere in 2013. It takes a young woman with a very comfortable life and removes the comfort as quickly as it can.
Sophie Chesterton is a girl about town: she knows the right people, attends the right parties and wears the right clothes. Underneath the surface she suspects that her best friends are not nice people and that her lifestyle does not add up to much, and her father wants her to make her own way in the world and give him something to be proud of.
After one shocking evening her life changes for good. She ends up scraping a living as an assistant to a glamour photographer, living in a hovel on the Old Kent Road with four smelly boys and eating baked beans out of the tin, a spectacular fall from where she began. The novel follows her attempts to get her life back and her discovery of what she actually wants it to be.
