Daughters unto Devils
Sixteen-year-old Amanda Verner fears that she is losing her mind, and she believes the baby will never stop crying.
About
Daughters unto Devils is a young adult novel by Amy Lukavics, published in 2015 and set on the American frontier. Its narrator, Amanda Verner, is sixteen and afraid that she is losing her mind.
What she wants to leave behind is a set of memories: her sickly mother giving birth to a terribly afflicted baby, and the cabin fever that took hold of Amanda's own mind afterwards.
She also has a secret, because she has been meeting a boy in secret and is carrying his child. The move from the family's small mountain cabin to the vast prairie looks like the chance to put all of that out of reach.
The Verners arrive on the prairie and find that it is not empty and not safe, and the novel is a horror story about a family that has travelled a long way to escape something and carried it with them. It is told in Amanda's own voice, which is why the reader is never quite certain what she has done.
