Dark Fire
Darius warns Tempest that there is always a price to pay when she accepts a position with his travelling troupe, and looking at the merciless line of his mouth and the emptiness in his black eyes she is afraid to ask what it is.
About
Dark Fire is a paranormal romance novel by Christine Feehan, published in 2001. It begins with Tempest accepting a position with a travelling troupe whose leader, Darius, tells her that there is always a price to pay.
She does not ask him what the price is. The description she gives of him is of somebody with a merciless mouth, an implacable resolve and black eyes with nothing behind them, which is enough to stop her asking and not enough to make her leave.
She has always been different from the people around her, and from the moment his arms close around her he seems to understand the gifts she has kept to herself. Being understood that completely is not the same as being safe, and the novel turns on the difference.
What he offers may be the love and belonging she has been looking for, or it may be a danger more potent than anything she has met, and the book keeps both readings available for as long as it can.
