Daisy Jones & The Six
A band makes one enormous record and plays one last show, and then it stops.
About
Daisy Jones & The Six is a novel by the American writer Taylor Jenkins Reid, published in 2019, and it is told from beginning to end as an oral history.
The book is assembled from interviews with the members of a fictional rock band and with the people around them, so the reader hears the same arguments and the same late nights described by different people who were all in the room, and is left to work out which of them is being straight. Daisy Jones is a young singer from Los Angeles who has been writing songs since she was a teenager. Billy Dunne is the band's songwriter and lead singer, and the two of them are the reason the group becomes what it becomes.
The interviews are arranged by year and run from the band's lean beginnings through the record that makes them famous to the tour that finishes them, and printed between the transcripts are the lyrics of the songs they are describing. Reid has said the band is loosely inspired by Fleetwood Mac and the making of Rumours, and the form suits the subject: a group of people who cannot agree on what happened to them, each of them certain the others were the problem.
