Come to Castlemoor
Kathy Hunt travels to Castlemoor after her brother dies suddenly, intending to finish the book he was writing about the old rites once performed on the moors nearby.
About
Come to Castlemoor is a gothic romance by the American writer Jennifer Wilde, published in 1970. It is set on the English moors, in a house with a reputation, and it belongs to the school of romantic suspense that was at its most popular in that decade.
Kathy Hunt comes to Castlemoor because her brother has died there, suddenly and without explanation, and she means to finish the work he had begun: a study of the primitive rites once performed on the moors around the house. When she arrives she finds the manuscript gone and the neighbourhood frightened of something that nobody will name.
There is a man who says he loves her, Edward Clark, who tells her plainly that the danger she has walked into is real, and there are the people of the house, who know more than they are willing to say. Kathy keeps looking for her brother's notes, and the search takes her towards the same ceremonies he had been describing. The novel keeps to the conventions of its kind: an isolated house, a woman alone in it, a warning that cannot be ignored and a man whose motives she cannot read.
