Clockwork Angel
Tessa Gray crosses the Atlantic in 1878 to join her brother in London and is taken from the docks by two women who want her for what she can do.
About
Clockwork Angel is the first book of The Infernal Devices trilogy by Cassandra Clare, published in 2010 and set in Victorian London. It shares a world with her Mortal Instruments series but stands earlier in its history, among the Shadowhunters who police the supernatural part of the city.
Tessa Gray travels to London after her aunt's death, sent for by her brother Nathaniel, and is kidnapped at the docks by two women who have been collecting people with unusual abilities. They want her for what she can do with other people's shape and memory, and she learns from them that her own nature is not what she believed, and that her rescue comes from the Shadowhunters chasing the same pair.
Clare writes the book as a mystery with a small group of young investigators, and the clockwork devices of the title give the trilogy its name and its threat. The novel sets up a romance and a conspiracy at the same time, and it was followed by two further volumes.
