Christine
In 1978, in a suburb outside Pittsburgh, a seventeen-year-old called Arnie Cunningham stops on his way home to look at a dilapidated 1958 Plymouth Fury sitting on a neglected lawn.
About
Christine is a novel by the American writer Stephen King, published in 1983 and set in the fictional suburb of Libertyville, Pennsylvania.
Arnie is not popular, not happy and not in charge of anything, and the car is the first object that has ever been entirely his; he spends his evenings and his money restoring it, and the parts of his life that used to belong to other people stop mattering. The novel's narrator is his friend Dennis Guilder, who dislikes the car before he has a reason to, since the one time he sat in it he found himself seeing somewhere else. King writes the possession slowly, so that the reader can watch Arnie change and the town's bullies begin to come off worse than they should, and he uses the car's previous owner, Roland D. LeBay, to connect the machine to a history of cruelty it has kept. King has said the idea arrived while he was driving and saw his odometer turn over from 9999.9 to 10,000, which set him thinking about an odometer that ran backwards and a car that grew younger as its owner did.
