Case Histories
Jackson Brodie is a former police inspector making a living as a private investigator in Cambridge, and three old family tragedies come to him at once: a little girl who vanished from a garden thirty years ago, a woman who killed her husband with an axe, and a solicitor's daughter murdered for no reason anybody can find.
About
Case Histories is a detective novel by the English writer Kate Atkinson, published in 2004 and the first of her books about Jackson Brodie.
The book is set in Cambridge and built around three cases that have nothing to do with each other. The first is the disappearance of Olivia Land, a small girl who went missing from a garden and was never found; thirty years on, two of her surviving sisters meet again when their father dies and find something in the house that changes what they thought they knew. The second is the murder of a husband by his wife, with an axe, in front of their child. The third is the killing of a solicitor's daughter, apparently without motive. Jackson Brodie, a former police inspector now working privately, is drawn into all three, and the novel moves between the cases and the people they left behind.
Atkinson has continued the series, with further novels about Brodie appearing over the following two decades, and her books are as much about families and loss as about detection.
