Candle in the Window
Lady Saura of Roget has spent years in servitude with her fortune in the hands of a stepfather who does as he likes with it, and she is sent for by Sir William of Miraval, a knight who swore to live by his sword until an injury took his sight.
About
Candle in the Window is a historical romance by the American writer Christina Dodd, published in 1992 and the first of her medieval novels.
Lady Saura of Roget has lived a narrow life in which her inheritance has been controlled by an unscrupulous stepfather and very little has been hers to decide, and she is summoned to the castle of Sir William of Miraval, a knight whose career ended when he was blinded. The man she finds there is trying to run an estate and defend it without the one sense his whole life was built on, and Saura's arrival changes how the household works. Their marriage is the arrangement the novel builds towards, and the pressure on it comes from the people who want the castle, the land, or Saura's fortune, and who are prepared to fight for them. Dodd went on to write a series of medieval romances, and this is the book that begins it.
The later novels in the series return to the same period and to the same kind of castle household, with knights, heiresses and the politics that surround them.
