About

Broken Angels is a military science fiction novel by the British writer Richard Morgan, published in 2003 and the second book about Takeshi Kovacs, after Altered Carbon.

Some thirty years after the events of the first novel, Kovacs is serving in Carrera's Wedge, a mercenary organisation that has joined a war on a distant planet called Sanction IV, where the fighting is between corporate governments and a rebel movement that opposes them. A pilot recruits him for a private scheme: a Martian artefact has been found which opens onto a starship left behind by a civilisation that has been gone for a very long time, and the people who know about it want it for themselves. To reach it they have to get the archaeologue who led the original discovery out of a prison camp, which puts Kovacs in the middle of a battlefield where truces are arranged and broken by everybody at once. Morgan's future is one in which death is a delay, since a consciousness can be preserved and put into another body for a price.

The series continues with Woken Furies, and the three novels follow the same character through different parts of the same colonial society.
