Blindside
Six-year-old Sam Kettering is kidnapped from his home and manages to escape on his own, and everybody assumes that the worst is over.
About
Blindside is a novel by the American writer Catherine Coulter, published in 2003 and one of her books about the FBI agents Savich and Sherlock.
Sam escapes from the men who took him, which should be the end of the case, and the fact that it is not is what makes the book work: the people holding him want something specific and they are willing to try twice. Miles Kettering, his father, is a former agent, and the investigation takes him and the two FBI agents into a part of the country where a local preacher has a great deal of influence. Savich is also dealing with a separate investigation, and the two strands run alongside each other through the middle of the book. Coulter writes the procedural detail and the couple's marriage at once, and the tone stays light even when the plot concerns a child in danger.
It is one of the later novels in the series, and it followed several books about the same two agents, in the middle of a long run of them.
