About
Betrayed is a historical romance by the American writer Arnette Lamb, published in 1996 and set in Scotland.
Sarah MacKenzie has grown up believing that she is the illegitimate daughter of Lachlan, the Duke of Ross, and when he tells her that her father was in fact the local sheriff, the news takes away the identity she had built her life around. She leaves for Edinburgh, where she intends to put her money and her attention into an orphanage and to make something useful out of the disappointment. The complication is the Elliot family, who had expected her to marry their son and who need the dowry that came with her, and who are not prepared to accept that the arrangement has ended. Lamb wrote several romances about the same Scottish families, and this novel follows on from Highland Rogue.
It is the second of the novels about that family, and the duke's household and the Edinburgh of the period are in the background of both. The series was published through the middle of the 1990s.
