Behind Her Eyes
David and Adele appear to be the ideal couple: he is a successful psychiatrist and she is the wife who adores him, and neither of them explains why he is so controlling or what she is keeping back.
About
Behind Her Eyes is a thriller by the English writer Sarah Pinborough, published on 23 January 2017.
The novel is built around three people. David Martin is a psychiatrist with a practice in London, and his wife Adele is charming, careful and not telling the truth about her marriage. Louise Barnsley is a single mother working as a secretary, and she meets David in a bar before discovering that he is her new employer, which is how she is drawn into the household. The book moves between their accounts, and the questions it asks are about why David watches his wife so closely, what happened to Adele before she met him and who Louise can believe. Louise is the third of the narrators, and her account is the one that has to be weighed against the couple's. Pinborough writes the novel as domestic suspense with a puzzle in the middle, and it was adapted into a television series of the same name.
The book was a New York Times bestseller, and it is one of several psychological thrillers she has written since turning to the form.
