Ancillary Sword
Breq is a soldier who used to be a warship: once a weapon of conquest controlling thousands of minds, she now has a single body and serves the emperor.
About
Ancillary Sword is a science fiction novel by the American writer Ann Leckie, published in October 2014. It is the second novel in the Imperial Radch space opera trilogy, which began with Ancillary Justice in 2013 and ended with Ancillary Mercy in 2015.
The novel was generally well received by critics. It won the BSFA Award for Best Novel and the Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel, and was nominated for the Nebula and Hugo awards. Those awards place it with the most decorated space opera of its period.
The protagonist's situation is the book's central oddity: a former ship's artificial intelligence now resident in one body, employed by the same empire it once served as a weapon, and sent to a station connected to someone she killed. That combination of military history and personal liability is why the series is discussed as much for its treatment of identity as for its space opera machinery. Breq is sent to Athoek Station to protect the family of a lieutenant she once murdered, which is the errand the novel is built on.
