Amulet
After her father dies in a car accident, Emily Hayes moves with her mother and brother into her great-grandfather's old house, where she finds a stone amulet in the library.
About
Amulet is a children's fantasy and adventure series written and illustrated by Kazu Kibuishi and published by Scholastic under its Graphix imprint. The first volume, The Stonekeeper, appeared in 2008, and the story is told as a graphic novel in colour, with the text carried largely in speech balloons.
Emily Hayes and her brother Navin move into the house their great-grandfather built, and Emily finds an amulet in the library that speaks to her. When a creature from the world beneath the house takes their mother, the two of them follow, and Emily is told that the stone makes her responsible for the place she has been brought to.
Kibuishi builds the book around a family in the middle of a loss and around the question of whether a powerful object should be trusted, and the illustrations carry the action rather than describing it. The series ran to nine volumes and became a fixture of school and library reading, with the later books taking Emily further into the world below and widening the cast around her.
