Alice
A woman with tangled hair and no memory of how she came to be there is locked in a hospital in the Old City, sure only of a tea party long ago, long ears and blood.
About
Alice is a dark fantasy novel by the American writer Christina Henry, published by Ace Books in 2015. It takes Lewis Carroll's two Alice books as a starting point and turns them into a story of escape, memory and revenge set in a city that has gone badly wrong.
The woman at the centre of the book has been locked in a hospital in the Old City, her hair in tangles and her memory of how she got there gone. All she has of her past is a tea party, something about long ears, and blood. Then a fire breaks out, and the hole she has been kept in becomes a way out.
Once free she sets out to discover what was done to her all those years ago. Something else has also escaped, something dark and powerful, and following it takes her deeper into the Old City towards the creature she calls the Rabbit. Henry's Old City is a warren of crumbling buildings and desperate people rather than a wonderland, and her heroine is trying to survive it rather than enjoy it.
