Abandon
Pierce tries to go back to the life she had before the accident and finds that she is never quite alone: somebody is always watching her.
About
Abandon is a young adult novel by the American writer Meg Cabot, published in 2011. It is the first book of a series that takes its shape from the story of Persephone and Hades.
Pierce is a girl who has come back from an accident and cannot settle into the life she had before it; she feels at once a part of the world she lives in and apart from it, and she is aware that somebody is always watching her. She moves to a new town and starts at a new school in the hope of beginning again, but the person who wants her back finds her there as well. He is no guardian angel, and the world he belongs to is not exactly heaven, and she is unable to stay away from him, particularly because he tends to appear when she least expects it and needs him most. The novel sets her ordinary life against the fact that escape from the realm of the dead is not possible while somebody on the other side wants her returned to it.
Cabot had written a long run of books for teenagers and adults before this one, and Abandon begins a series that uses Greek myth as the frame for a contemporary story. The book takes the tale of Persephone and Hades and moves it into an American high school, with Pierce as the girl who has been into the realm of the dead and come back out of it.
