A walk across the sun

Corban Addison2012Social realismFamily novel

A tsunami leaves two sisters in coastal India orphaned, and a friend of their father offers to take them to safety.

About

A Walk Across the Sun is a novel by the American writer Corban Addison, published in 2012 and concerned with human trafficking.

Ahalya and Sita are teenagers when the wave takes their family, and the man who offers to help them delivers them to a trafficker who sells them to a brothel. Ahalya agrees to take the clients herself in order to keep her sister out of it, and the novel follows the two of them through a world described without decoration. Thomas Clarke is an American lawyer whose marriage has ended after the death of his daughter, and he goes to India to work for an organisation that prosecutes trafficking cases. The two stories meet through the investigation, and Addison uses the legal process to show how difficult it is to recover a person once she has been sold.

The novel was the author's first, and it was written after research into trafficking cases and the organisations that work on them, with the legal procedure and the courtroom scenes kept accurate throughout.
