A Pack Divided

A Pack Divided is an adventure novel by Erin Hunter, published in 2015. It is the first book of a sequence about a group of dogs, and its central character, Storm, has a place in a pack for the first time she can remember.

The world she lives in was devastated by an event the dogs call the Big Growl, and by the time the book opens it has settled into something like peace. For Storm that means belonging somewhere, which is a new experience for her and one she has reason to value.

The peace is not stable. Tensions begin to rise among the dogs of the Wild Pack, and the novel argues that the greatest danger to a group can come from inside it rather than from the threats around it. Storm has to work out where her loyalty belongs while the pack she has joined is dividing against itself.

Storm was not born into the Wild Pack, which makes the question of loyalty harder for her than for the dogs who were. The book is about a group whose problem is not survival but leadership.
