A Lost Lady
Marian Forrester and her husband, Captain Daniel Forrester, live in the western town of Sweet Water, on the line of the Transcontinental Railroad, where he belongs to the age of the pioneers and she is the socialite everyone watches.
About
A Lost Lady is a novel by the American writer Willa Cather, published in 1923. It is told from the perspective of a male narrator, and its subject is Marian Forrester, a talented and charming married woman confined by the conventions and the economics of her position.
Marian lives at Sweet Water, a town on the Transcontinental Railroad, with her husband, Captain Daniel Forrester, who belongs to the generation of the pioneers while she is the socialite at the centre of local attention. Niel Herbert grows up in the town and falls in love with what she represents, and the book follows his effort to keep that picture of her intact.
What he sees instead is her pursuit by a series of suitors, an affair with Frank Ellinger and, after she is widowed, another with the lawyer Ivy Peters. By the end of the novel Niel has left Sweet Water and has understood that his admiration of her owed as much to the Captain's idealisation as to anything she did, and her decline is bound up with the town's passage out of one age and into the next.
