A Beautiful Friendship
Stephanie Harrington was eleven when her family moved from one planet to another, from a settled world to the frontier of a young star kingdom.
About
A Beautiful Friendship is a young adult science fiction novel by the American writer David Weber, published in 2011 and set in the same universe as his novels about Honor Harrington.
The book is a prequel, and its central character is Stephanie Harrington, an ancestor of the series' main figure, who was eleven when her family moved from the planet Meyerdahl to the newly settled Star Kingdom of Manticore. Sphinx, the world they settle on, is a frontier planet covered in forest, which is what Stephanie wanted, though the move has left her without the friends she had. What she finds in the woods is a species nobody has catalogued, and the relationship she begins with one of them is the start of an association that lasts for generations in the rest of the series. Weber's Manticore novels mix coming of age with the politics of a small kingdom that has to defend itself.
The novel grew out of an earlier short story of the same name, and the treecats become a fixture of the wider sequence.
