2312
By the year 2312 humanity has spread across the solar system, and the great city of Terminator on Mercury is built on rails so that it can stay just ahead of the sunrise.
About
2312 is a science fiction novel by the American writer Kim Stanley Robinson, published in 2012. It won the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 2013.
The book is set in the same span of history as Robinson's earlier Mars trilogy but much further on, when the settled worlds are not planets so much as engineered habitats: cities built on tracks, hollowed-out asteroids and moons, and a Venus whose atmosphere has been under construction for generations. Its central figure is Swan Er Hong, an artist from Terminator on Mercury, who is drawn into the politics of the system after a death in her circle. Robinson puts a great deal of the novel into the descriptions of how these places work and what it would feel like to live in them, and he intersperses the story with lists, extracts and other documents. The plot itself turns on an attack, and on the argument between the worlds that want to keep expanding and those that want the expansion to stop.
Robinson wrote the novel after his Mars books and brought the same interest in engineering and governance to a solar system that no longer depends on Earth.
